Soloxine is a prescription medication used to treat hypothyroidism. It provides thyroid replacement when the pet's thyroid gland isn't producing enough of its own. It is the synthetic hormone levothyroxine. Hypothyroidism is caused by lack of thyroid hormone and is characterized by lack of energy and weight gain. It is a disease commonly seen in middle age and older dogs.
Methimazole treats hyperthyroidism in cats, a condition in which too much thyroid hormone is produced. It will not cure the disease, but will usually control it if given for the rest of the cat's life. Methimazole may also be used to protect the kidneys in dogs receiving cisplatin, an anti-cancer drug.
