Rabies in Western Mass ALERT!

Posted on 2012-01-05 06:54:59

Hi Everyone,

Hope you all had a very happy new year and holiday season.

Unfortunately, with the coming new year news of a case of rabies infection in a fox has been confirmed.  This happened in Montague.  A few miles away from Greenfield.  This case and the fact that another person in eastern Massachusetts has highlighted the fact that rabies is a real concern for your pets and for any domestic animal in your area both small and large.  This includes horses, sheep, goats, cows, etc.

Please make sure your animals are up to date on their rabies vaccinations.  This is the only way to help protect them from exposure to this deadly virus.

Some Fall notes

Posted on 2011-10-14 04:16:06

Fall 2011.

I hope everyone is has been able to enjoy some of the great fall weather we have been having this year.  We are now watching the seasonal peak of color as the Fall foliage display is well on its way.  The seasonal beauty is a welcomed change from this year's two major disasters, a tornado and flood which will have a some major long term effects on the Pioneer Valley and Hill-town area.

This period of time marks other changes that you might be observing in your pets health.  The Pioneer Valley has always been an area of high rates of illness from allergies in both dogs and cats but, this year I have seen many severe cases of respiratory illness in cats, that have been asthma related.  I suspect the hot, wet weather did not help with a lot of pollen and mold in the air.

Please note that although with a few more good frosts the flea and mosquito population will die this this is not the case for ticks.  I usually say “tick season is from snow melt to snow fall.”  So, please continue using tick preventive measures to keep them from jumping on your pets.

If you are looking for a good book to read this Fall/Winter I would suggest: A Dog’s Purpose, A novel for Humans.  By W. Bruce Cameron.  http://adogspurpose.com/

Enjoy.

Spring 2011

Posted on 2011-04-12 08:09:15

April '11

As I am writing this the sun is shinning and it is about 70 degrees outside.   I should be out there and enjoying the beautiful weather and "Spring".   But first I just wanted to make sure that for some of you who have been asking about when to start your annual flea and tick treatments I hope you've started.  Now that the snow has melted ticks are out there!   I have already seen several on a few of our 4 legged friends.  So, be aware that tick season is here.

Mosquitoes, not yet here in the "hills".   So, you don't have to start heartworm medication but probably by the end or the month or for sure by the end of May.

Have a happy and safe Spring.

Enjoy.

Good reads

Posted on 2010-12-21 08:06:21

If your looking for a gift or just something to read while your inside this winter, I just finished a very interesting book called "Inside a Dog: What dogs see, smell and know" by Alexandra Horowitz.  Non-fiction and informative in just what is going on inside that four legged friend of yours mind.  She has done her homework and is very well referenced.

And a little bit ago I was given the book "Racing in the Rain" by Garth Stein.  A great story narrated from the dogs perspective about a wonderful relationship.

And then a classic from Garrison Keillor (you get to listen to this one) "Songs of the Cat".

Have a great holiday season and new year!
